Grit Wolany
Art Director, Designer, Trend Researcher
I already had 20 years’ professional experience as an art director before I started my degree. But the Master’s programme has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for me. My Master’s thesis focused on artificial intelligence and augmented creativity – a topic that has really taken off over the last year. Now I can put my knowledge to good use, supporting creatives and agencies with AI onboarding and running Midjourney workshops. At the same time, AI commissions have increased and I work on my prompting skills every day. I am also part of the Digital Skills & Spaces team at ZHdK, where I can apply my newly acquired knowledge in the areas of trend research and futures thinking.
So I can wholeheartedly recommend the course and would do it again in a heartbeat. It has helped me grow not only professionally but also personally.
Ooh, tricky question. Pretty much everything, really. In my job, I usually deal with lots of different topics at the same time, so I am exposed to quite a lot of different input. That always gives me new ideas. I love Are.na – it is basically a better version of Pinterest. There I always find great, quirky topic boards with pictures or articles. You can see who has saved what and where, so you are constantly moving from one exciting thing to the next. I always have a million browser tabs open.
My curiosity. There are so many interesting things out there. I find it hard to settle on just one thing and I would much rather do lots of different things all the time.
As a freelancer in advertising and communications, I am usually working on specific creative briefs. On the one hand, that is a good thing, as there are already certain guidelines in place within which I can let my ideas run wild. But of course, there are always quite a few people having their say. At the moment, I am finding my artistic freedom in the field of generative AI. I enjoy sitting there after work until 2 am, experimenting. Completely without pressure and free, simply for the fun of it. It is brilliant.
AI, AI, AI. Boring, I know… How will AI change our society? How can we actively shape these changes and respond to the coming transformation in a meaningful way? What do we want to automate, and what not? On the one hand, I am excited by the new possibilities; on the other hand, there are important ethical and social issues that should not be overlooked amidst all the excitement.
