Abhash Mittal

graphic designer

How would you explain to a child what your job involves?

Looking very closely at the world and trying really hard to be funny.

What kind of spaces do you need, and what does your practice require?

Either one that is completely overwhelming, so that my only coping mechanism is to think about work, or exactly the opposite.

Is there anything you are currently missing? Anything you always miss?

Boredom. Unfortunately, I have not been bored for a very, very, very long time, and I would love to know what I would do if that were to happen again.

What would you have become if not a graphic designer?

Computer scientist or investment banker.

What was your biggest misconception about your job?

Because people usually only see the end products created by designers, I initially had the impression that this was the main part of the job. Over time, however, I have come to realise that this profession involves much more than that: it is about observing and analysing, listening and understanding, and remaining open-minded, curious and friendly. For me, the human aspect of this field is almost as important – if not more important – than the actual work itself.
